Day 1 of 31 Days of Android App Goodness: TiKL-Touch to Talk

Posted by Naomi "DigitalFanGirl" On January - 1 - 2011

My oldest daughter actually turned me on to this app. TiKL is a touch-to-talk app that turns your android phone into a walkie talkie. It actually works really well. My two daughters and I use it all the time. We’ve been using TiKL since the summer and have had very little trouble with it.

TiKL is a FREE app and is very simple to install, setup and use. Once you install the TiKL app you can add your contacts by clicking the contacts button, selecting the people you want to add to your contacts list and then click done selecting. If the contacts you’ve added to your list don’t have the TiKL app installed on their phone (android or iPhone), you simply click the invite button. This will direct you to your text message application with a pre-written text message; you choose who you want to text this invite to and presto you’re done. When you’re ready to “walkie talkie” someone, just click the big icon in the middle of the app.

I read some reports that say TiKL doesn’t work over wifi, but I’ve used it over wifi and works great. If you’re concerned about losing range, DON’T. My girls and I have used this app while in separate locations several miles apart and it still works very well. It also has a “do not disturb” option you can check for when you’re at work. So no need to worry about being at work or in a meeting and being embarrassed by someone who’s walkie talkied you.

Hands down, TiKL is a great communication tool and it’s certainly the better tool to use when needing to verbalize very short messages. It’s one app I find extremely helpful when communicating with my kids. Asking them where they are, if they’re ready to be picked up or telling them I’m running late is so much faster to do using TiKL.
